John Travolta Gives His Thoughts About 'Grease' Prequel, 'Summer Nights'

Olivia Newton-John And John Travolta In 'Grease'

John Travolta has some valid concerns about the upcoming Grease prequel.

The actor, one of the leading stars of the classic 1978 musical film, spoke about his apprehensions regarding Paramount Studios attempting to recreate the magic of the original with a prequel, titled Summer Nights.

ā€œGrease itself, no matter whether you do it in a high school production, a college production, or a TV production or the original movie, is a perfect piece of entertainment. Thatā€™s what I think,ā€ Travolta said during Friday's appearance on The Talk (May 24).

ā€œIf you repeat that perfect piece of entertainment you always succeed, when you go away from it, then itā€™s a little risky," he added. "But then if you are clever enough, Iā€™d imagine you could make it work. But thatā€™s yet to be seen. How do you do that? No one can describe the magic of Grease.ā€

As The Hollywood Reporter revealed in April, the project, which will reportedly predate the events of the original flick starring Travolta as Danny and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy, will also "recount the summer fling between characters Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson that is mentioned in the song 'Summer Nights.'" If you can remember, both characters reminisce about their summertime encounter earlier in the rom-com, however, the new project seems to explore this even more.

Even so, Grease reworks have been done and done again ā€” with mixed success. The movie received several spinoff adaptations since its initial release, including a never-before-seen sequel slated to debut in 1982 and a live-for-television version in 2016 from Fox, which claimed five Emmy Awards.
