New Jersey Man Is Ninth Person To Mysteriously Die In Dominican Republic

A New Jersey man is the latest person to die under mysterious circumstances while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. 55-year-old Joseph Allen was found dead in his room at the Terra Linda Resort in Sosua, where he was celebrating his friend's birthday.

Allen's family told NBC New York that he said to them that the heat was bothering him and he was going back to his room to take a shower and lie down. The next morning, Allen was found my a housekeeper.

"The maid opens the door, screams, slams the door. My brother is on the floor dead, between his room and the bathroom," Jason Allen said.

Officials have not said what caused Allen's sudden death, and his family stated that he was given a clean bill of health from a doctor prior to the trip. While they are waiting for answers, Jason says that he doesn't want to start speculating about what happened.

"I'd rather not guess because you will drive yourself crazy with that, but I do think something is off, and I think it needs to be investigated no matter how much money or how much time it is," he said.

Joseph is the ninth relatively healthy person to die under strange circumstances in the Dominican Republic in the past year.

Numerous people have also reported getting sick during their vacation. A group of teenagers celebrating their high school graduation became ill after eating at a Japanese restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. Back in April, nearly two dozen Jimmy Buffett fans also reported getting sick while staying at the same hotel.

Despite the similarities in the cases, Dominican authorities say they are not related.
