Referee Injured by Cannon Blast at Football Game

Football teams have different ways to celebrate big plays. Some teams clang cowbells, some incorporate pyrotechnics, some simply play a fight song and everyone cheers.

The Maine Maritime Academy appears to be a big fan of firing off a cannon... so much so that reports say that a fan brought their own cannon and fired it at the Saturday September 21st game.

There are a series of potential problems with a fan bringing their own cannon to a sporting event, the biggest of which is "what if the person fires the cannon into the direction of the field?"

The cannon wasn't armed with a traditional projectile but instead a "wad of packing material" intended to just allow the cannon blast to make a loud noise and nothing else.

However the gunpowder and "wad" were directed towards the field and impacted the referee who was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

School officials say that fans will no longer be allowed to bring cannons to the games.
