No. 3 Lady Cougars Opens Season With Win

CLEMSON, S.C. - The third-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team swept Anderson 7-0 to begin the 2019 season Sunday afternoon. The matches took place on the campus of Clemson University. 

Playing under the new scoring rules, the Lady Cougars earned the single point after sweeping doubles. The tightest doubles match of the day came at the top spot where second-ranked Beatriz Lopez and Marleen Tilgner  battled Laura Dean and Mirna Curcic. The Lady Cougar duo toughed out the 6-4 decision. Second and third doubles both ended by the same 6-1 margin. Tenth-ranked  Luise Sachs and Noa Davico  recorded the win at second doubles while Candice Paya and Natalia Kattah Paz  finished off the doubles sweep at the third position.

CSU only lost one set in singles action with fourth singles going the distance. Tenth-ranked Sachs walked away victorious in the match taking down Tarlouskaya 6-1, 2-6, 10-4. At first singles, 22nd-ranked Lopez won both sets 6-4 over Dean. Twenty-fifth-ranked Tilgner dominated Curcic at second singles winning the match 6-1, 6-4.

Paya and Davico had no trouble in their matches. Playing at third singles, 46th-ranked Paya took her match 6-0, 6-2 while 18th-ranked Davico dropped just one game at fourth singles. Clara Audap  and Cameron Blanchard played just set with the CSU freshman coming away with the 9-7 win.

The Lady Cougars will kick off its home portion of their schedule on Friday, Feb. 8 hosting No. 7 St. Leo at the John W. Walden Tennis Center. The matches will begin at 2 p.m.
