Team USA Beats Japan 2-1 in Softball Gold Medal Game

The U.S. softball team protected the homeland Sunday.

After losing to Japan in the Japan All-Star Series in Tokyo, Team USA beat Japan 2-1 in the Gold Medal game of the USA Softball International Cup here in Columbus.

The tournament was the first time the U.S. national team has played in Columbus since the 1996 Olympic tournament was held here, in softball’s Olympic debut.

The U.S. is ranked number 1 in the world and Japan is ranked number 2, and are expected to be the two favorites when softball returns to the Olympic Games next year in Tokyo.

Also on Sunday, the U.S. U-19 team, won a medal in the tournament for the first time by beating Scrap Yard Fast Pitch, 8-0 in the bronze-medal game.
