CLEMSON, S.C. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team opened the season in style sweeping Anderson 7-0 Sunday. The match took place on the campus of Clemson University.
Playing under the new scoring rules, the Cougars won two of the three doubles matches to earn the point. In second doubles, No. 15 KP Pannu and Matei Avram took care of business downing Ignacio Bidegain and Preston Morpeth 6-4. CSU also got the win at the third spot with Fabien Asdrubal and Arnold Kokulewski winning 6-2 over Tomas Depaggio and Simon Wilson. At the top spot, top-ranked Zach Whaanga and Alvaro Regalado fell 6-3 to Spencer Brown and Adam Kush.
In singles action, No. 1 Pannu won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 over 23rd-ranked Bidegain. Twenty-fifth ranked Regalado breezed in his match taking down Brown 6-3, 6-0 in the second position. Asdrubal and Kokulewski each dropped just single games in straight set wins at the third and fourth position, respectively.
Playing in the fifth position, Tommaso Schold won his match 6-2, 6-1. With the match in hand, Matei Avram and Simon Wilson played a single set with the Cougar taking the match 8-5.
Columbus State will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 8 taking on seventh-ranked St. Leo at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
